Hart County Animal Shelter Begins Transformation
New Nonprofit Will Build Facility and Manage Operations
Special to the News-Herald
Animal Haven of Hart County, a new nonprofit, is thrilled to announce its formation and current plans to build a new state-of-the-art facility to house the stray and surrendered dogs of Hart County.
The decision to establish a nonprofit animal shelter stems from a shared vision between local animal advocates and county officials. By transitioning to a nonprofit model, “The Haven” will be able to implement more flexible and innovative programs to address the needs of strays in the area. The county fiscal court will provide financial support to the nonprofit, allowing for the efficient management and operation of the shelter while freeing up resources for other county needs. This transition is estimated to save the Hart County taxpayers $1 million over the next decade.
The new facility will be located on acreage at 3324 S. Dixie Hwy (near the Hart County Veterans’ Association community center) and will feature at least 100 kennels, play areas, and be equipped to host community outreach programs. The facility will not house cats in the initial phase but will include opportunities for cats in a future phase. The Haven plans to work closely with volunteers, local businesses, and animal lovers to create a sustainable and impactful organization. They are currently hosting a logo design contest for HCHS students to submit design ideas.
“We are excited to begin the fundraising and building process for The Haven’s facilities,” stated current Hart County Shelter Director Tony Roberts. “The community is already showing their support and we are looking forward to accomplishing big things in 2025.”
Fundraising events and community initiatives will be launched to support the phases of the building process and engage the public. The Haven is looking forward to a major fundraiser on May 17, 2025 – an outdoor family-friendly concert featuring three bands and food trucks to be held at the Hollow of Unrest Amphitheater in Bonnieville.
“We hope to make this an annual event to bring the community together and support The Haven,” said Roberts.
