When people think about Bowling Park, they might think of the ducks gliding through the water on the pond, but for some it makes them think about all the people who work so hard behind the scenes to keep everything running as smoothly.
Bowling Park’s Executive Director Lisa Boswell takes care of the overall business of the park, which is a lot, but there is someone who rarely gets any recognition and really doesn’t want the spotlight shined on her, Kathy Powers. She is the manager of the food pantry and takes care of the bingo hall each weekend.
If you have ever been a volunteer working at bingo, you know it’s Kathy who keeps it all running. She tracks all of the bingo packs and the pull tabs, what goes out on the floor and what comes back to the office, plus tallies the money from each as the bookkeeper. She is the go-to person if there is a question or problem. What many don’t realize is that Kathy dedicates her weekends at bingo entirely as a volunteer.
Kathy works Saturday night and Sunday evening every week at bingo and during the week she’s at the food pantry. Anyone that has picked up commodities knows its crazy busy there those two days each month. The pantry also hands out senior boxes and the heat and eat meals and the sign-up sheet for both. The pantry also gets deliveries from various businesses over the course of each week and someone has to take care of all that.
Several regular volunteers work at the food pantry and they have a high respect for Kathy. The same goes for the people who work at bingo.
Gail, one of the volunteers, told us, “She is the backbone of the food pantry,” the other volunteers agreed and one added, “Kathy is amazing. I don’t know how she keeps it all straight.”
We at the Herald-News just wanted to say thank you and let everyone know about all the work you do.
