May 2nd marked the nation’s 73rd National Day of Prayer, with this year’s theme being “Light up the Word, Light up the World”.
At a time of stress and turmoil across the nation and entire globe, many believe there is a very strong need for prayer right now. Such was the sediment felt during Hart County’s recognition of the occasion.
Along the Courthouse lawn in Munfordville, several pastors and others gathered together in fellowship to pray for the county, country, and world, including Bro. D.L. Talley of Hardyville Union Church. He prayed for the government and nation, and also read from Psalm 33.
“Our nation seems to be divided in a lot of different ways, our government divided, a lot of animosity in this day and time,” Talley said. “…But you and I today are here, not divided, not in chaos, but in order and peace, and ready to pray and take on whatever this world throws at us…We are not on the losing end of this thing. You and I are empowered today, empowered by the Holy Ghost.”
Bro. Douglas Barbour of Mt. Zion Baptist Church prayed for the sanctity of life.
“…You (Lord) set up marriage between a man and a woman, and that’s how life is made. Thank you for that, Father,” Barbour spoke. “Lord, help us as a nation to turn back to you, that we might see what you want us to see, that we’ve been born again, that we’ve been led by your righteous spirit, and whatever you lead, it will be right. Father, again, forgive us for our sins…”
Dewayne Forbis, owner of WLOC, spoke about media.
“News happens quick…but sometimes it’s not all true,” Forbis said. “But we know one thing that’s true, and that’s God’s Word, and that’s the great media, the media that will help save your soul.”
Sis. Renee Arterburn with New Life Faith Center read from Psalm 24 and brought forth prayer for the nation’s military.
“The Lord spoke to me that you cannot have victory without obedience,” Arterburn said. “…We want the Lord of battle to come and battle for us…As a nation, the only way we can do that is by bowing our knee to the King of Glory, lifting up or gates, and not giving ourselves over to that which is idolatry.”
Among others who spoke and prayed during the event were Bro. Gary Puckett of Munfordville Church of God, Sis. Judy Jones of Immanuel Ministry Church, Bro. Steve Caven of Green’s Chapel Church of Christ, Bro. Phillip Trent of Immanuel Ministry Church, Bro. Paul Grider of The Way Church, and Bro. DeWayne Kidd of Creekside Church.
National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 y a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. The annual observance is held each year on the first Thursday of May.
