The Edmonton Senior Center was busy last Tuesday morning as everyone gathered for the open house and Proclamation Signing.
The Barren River Area Development District (BRADD) is celebrating Older Americans Month at each senior center in the 10-county BRADD area by holding an open house and proclamation signing. BRADD has many programs available to older Americans in the community.
Edmonton Center Manager Debbie Holley spoke of the many activities available to seniors at the center and thanked the volunteers who provide help where needed to keep the center running smoothly. Some of the programs available provide meals, education on topics such as diabetes, recreation, and can link seniors and their families with needed programs.
BRADD Executive Director Eric Sexton read aloud the proclamation to those in attendance. The last paragraph summed it up the best, “And whereas we recognize the importance of supporting caregivers, promoting access to health care, encouraging active lifestyles, and fostering social connection to improve overall well-being among older adults. And whereas senior centers and community organizations serve as vital hubs for engagement, education, and support, helping older adults remain active, connected, and valued members of society.”
He then asked if the mayor and judge would like to say a few words to those in the room.
Mayor Doug Smith said, “Socialization is a really important thing for older people to have. And if you could get other people to come down and join you, it would be great. Kind of reach out and talk to them, maybe get them to come down here.”
“I’m proud we’re part of BRADD. It’s a big asset. I’m proud we have Eric, a local boy, and they’re really beneficial. And I’ll say this, this is a great resource for Metcalfe County. I know a lot of you that come here on a daily basis. If you didn’t have this, you’d be sitting home alone. And that is not healthy… encourage people to come…” said Judge/Executive Larry Wilson.
Each attendee was provided with a Deterra In-Home Drug Deactivation Pouch by Lynda Wilkerson, who also provided instruction for their use.
Those attending enjoyed refreshments, a game of pool for some, and time socializing with friends. The center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon to anyone in the county, age 60 and up.
If you are a caregiver, a senior, or a family member needing assistance with aging services, you can contact BRADD’s Aging/Disability Services at 1-800-395-7654 or (270) 782 9223.
