Brownsville City Council held its regular meeting on May 5, 2026, all members were in attendance.

The City Council brought forward the motion of the agreement between Brownsville City and Leitchfield Gas. The Council and city attorney Marc Lovell carefully went over the contract before a vote was taken to have the first reading of the Ordinance #5-26. This allows Mayor Ricky Simon to sign a contract with Leitchfield Gas, for all responsibilities of the gas to be taken over by Leitchfield Gas. Brownsville had previously been in a joint contract with Leitchfield Gas that had not produced financial gains as they thought it would. The Second reading was held on May 7, 2026.

In new business; missing street signs are being replaced around town, City Clerk Lori Burnett asked if anyone knew of streets in need of repair for the MRA/LGEA road improvements.

In the Mayor’s updates, Mayor Ricky Simon said the City has taken on some students through Three Corners for job shadowing this summer. The students will get need job skills experience to prepare them for future jobs.

Brownsville police Chief Jeremy Hodges stated he is waiting to hear back from some grants and looking for others to apply for to supplement the need for equipment.

City Clerk Lori Burnett gave a report on several things. First the ARPA FUND Grant that was only for building security, is almost out of time to be used. If they cannot get the security glass and door installed in the next few months they will have to send the money back. She has also been working on more grant money for the city park. Lori is hopeful to secure grants for trails and playground equipment. Burnett is in talks with WRECC about the cities bill, She is hoping to get this lowered to save money for the city. The city is still struggling with delinquent business license inside Brownsville and the Council will need to address the issue in the near future.

The meeting was then adjourned. The next meeting will be on June 1, 2026 at 5:00pm in the City Hall building.
