The Cal Ripken District Tournament was played in Greenville/Central City last week. Butler County’s 8U and 10U groups won one and lost one during pool play games. The 8U squad had been beaten by Muhlenberg County; however, in the first-round game of the tournament, BC returned the favor to advance to the championship.
Unfortunately, the outcome was not in favor for youngsters in the championship game. Ohio County scored six runs in the first and second innings to upend the Bears. On the same night, in the opening round of tournament play, the older group could not hold onto a 2-1 advantage after four innings of play against the Owensboro Western All Stars.
Drew Southerland went four strong innings, but the youthful southpaw could not get the same consistent defense in the top of the fifth; Western flipped the score, 4-2, to gain momentum. They would tack on another in the sixth. BC tried to rally, but ultimately fell short, 5-3.
