As the Bears fell to the Wildcats in the opening round of the 12th District Baseball Tournament, the Lady Bears pulled off the upset win over the Lady Cats of Edmonson County in the semis to go to the championship. In both tournaments, awards were presented to representatives of each district team based on the coaches of those teams.

Receiving the All-District and All-Tournament for the Lady Bears were juniors, Karrington Hunt and Miley Franzell. Hunt, who plays short, led the team in many offensive statistics; she hit .427 with only four strikeouts in over 100 at-bats and perfect ten for ten swiping bags.

Franzell, who was a staple in the circle for Coach Amy Rogers’ Lady Bears, was not too shabby with the stick herself. Franzell was second on the team with 40 hits, only four behind Hunt. A .333 batting average at the dish while logging nearly 130 innings of work on the pitcher’s plate is a load for player throughout a season.

Senior Lady Bear, Lydia Brown, who participates in many extra-curricular activities, was honored with the All-Academic Award representative from Butler County.

On the baseball side of things, sophomore catcher, Brycen Mode, who seems to be recovering well from his season-ending eye injury, which was extremely scary, had an exceptional season and unanimously made All-District. Mode, who only struck out twice on the year, hit an even .500 with two dingers, two triples, ten doubles, and was only thrown out once in 19 stolen base attempts. Mode was voted to the 2nd Team All-Region.

Seniors, Justin Castlen and Garrett Phelps, were both leaders in the dugout for Coach Bo West. Statistically, from an offensive stance, the two were very close in all areas of the game. Phelps was relied on pitching more, which may have given him a nod in receiving All-District. Castlen, who had two hits and drove in one against Edmonson County in the tournament, rightfully was honored as All-Tournament.

Another senior, Duncan Tyree, who was pitcher of the year for Coach West, took prestige in claiming the All-Academic Award for the Bears.
