Coach Michael Meredith and the Edmonson County Wildcats were 4-3 healing into spring break. ECHS had wins over Owensboro Knights Christian (Owensboro), (KY homeschool), Trinity (Whitesville-twice), and Allen County-Scottsville.

ECHS lost to Monroe County, Breckinridge County and a walk off win by Hart County on a Saturday afternoon. ECHS led 7-5 heading into the last inning, but costly errors and a few clutch hits including a squeeze bunt led to Raider victory. Chase Bullock and Garrett Lyons led ECHS at the plate with 2 hits each with both batters recording doubles. Logan Key, Jack Lich, and Elliot Stice each had a hit.

Tyson Meredith was the starting pitcher. Meredith went 5 ⅔ innings giving up 4 hits, but no earned runs. He walked 1 and struck out 3 batters. Meredith looked sharp on the bump and was not shaken by the errors that led to the 5 runs HCHS got during his almost 6 innings of work.

Coach Meredith can definitely count on this young sophomore this season. Meredith only walked 1 batter despite having trouble early in the game getting his curveball over the plate. For a sophomore, he showed a lot of grit and poise.

Junior Jacob Logan came in a tough situation in the 7th inning and took the loss. Logan gave up 2 hits, and 3 runs, but only 1 run was earned. He struck out 1 and walked 1. Like his predecessor, Logan had multiple pitches and would have gotten out of the inning without the Wildcat miscues.

Garrett Lyons is the lone senior on this year’s squad.

The KHSAA roster also lists 5 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 10 freshmen. The Wildcats are definitely a young team in Coach Meredith’s third season, but the coach has a knack for getting his teams to be playing their best baseball come time for the district tournament.

Last season, ECHS finished with an overall record of 22 – 10 and 7 – 1 in District 12. The Wildcats finished as district runners-up and advanced to the Region 3 tourney.

The Wildcats already have 2 important district victories over Trinity (Whitesville) before the break. One win came in 5 innings, 12-1. In the 1st win, Eli Meredith led ECHS with 3 hits.  Two Wildcats had 2 hits, Drew Pierce and Hunter Wilson. Meredith and Pierce each had a double. Bullock added a single.

Wilson smacked a homer and finished the game with 6 RBIs. Wilson also pitched a complete game picking up the win allowing 1 hit, no earned runs, 3 walks, and 12 strikeouts.

The second victory, 18-17, was a slugfest. Pierce had 3 hits, 2 RBIs, and a double. Bullock and Lyons each had 2 hits with Lyons plating 2 runs. Eli Meredith (RBI), Jake Coates, Logan Key ( 2 RBI), and Wilson (2 RBI) also got a hit. Jacob Logan had 3 RBIs.

Four different Wildcats pitched in the district win. Drew Pierce got the start and picked up the win. He walked 5 and struck out 5. Eli Meredith, Jacob Logan, Garrett Lyons, and Elliot Stice were the Wildcats other hurlers. Lyons picked up the save.
