Five years ago, Christy Havens spearheaded an outlet for others who may be dealing with struggles in his/her life mentally. National Alliance on Mental Illness is open to all adults living with mental health conditions, regardless of diagnosis. The Butler County Chapter, which has Andrea Lawrence and Laura Crafton assisting Havens, meet via Zoom regularly for convenience and confidentiality, but are available to meet in person, also.

The car show, helped supported by Eric Sublett, owner of Firehouse Pizza, is an effort to bring the community together while sharing this avenue for people in our community and surrounding areas. “We have an individual from Texas who joins our meetings, and we are always looking to boost our membership,” Havens explained it can be for anyone.

Community members came out to enjoy the cars and conversation at the car show hosted in support of NAMI Butler County. The event was organized by Christy Havens and supported by Firehouse Pizza owner Eric Sublett to help spread the message that no one faces mental health struggles alone.   PHOTO | Greg Moore

There is not a cost for participants, and no specific medical therapy or medication is endorsed or recommended from NAMI Connection. “It’s about helping people find their inner strength and express themselves in a setting free of judgment,” the ladies enlightened. “We want them to know they are not alone in these moments; too many individuals live with traumatic experiences or feelings that get suppressed.”
