The Raiders and Coach Brandon Clemons, as well as Coach Caitlyn Smith and the Lady Raiders, hosted a special pre-game ceremony last week when the teams wore pink jerseys signifying they were united to “Strike Out Cancer.”
The Raider and Lady Raider players took turns walking the bases in honor of family members, friends, or the memory of those who had battled or were battling Cancer. The names of community members were read out loud as each player took their turn from home plate to first, second, third base, and then ended back home where they started.
Both teams had a special fan and a cancer survivor or patient throw out the first pitch. The Lady Raiders had young Aniston Roten, a cancer survivor, throw the first pitch out to her catcher and sister, Abby Rose Roten. The two sisters hugged after the pitch, and the Lady Raider fans erupted in applause.
The Raiders had mother, Tracy Owens, throw out the first pitch to her catcher and son, Gage Owens. Tracy Owens recently began her treatment to battle cancer. The mother and son hugged after she threw out the first pitch. Coach Clemons then hugged Gage and Tracy Owens in an emotional moment, followed by the fans cheering and calling out Tracy Owens’ name to let her know she had their support.
The Lady Raiders also let balloons go at the end of their program to honor those who had battled cancer.
