“Hart County: We have a problem!”

Nearly one-quarter of dogs taken to shelters in the United States are relinquished by their owners. According to data from the Shelter Animals Count website, that number was almost 200,000 in 2023.

However, as heartbreaking as it can be to have to abandon your pet at the shelter, it’s a much better option than what some irresponsible pet owners are resorting to: dumping dogs.

Dog dumping occurs when careless owners take their dogs into rural areas and leave them. For those owners, this may be the quick and easy way to relinquish their responsibilities. But the harsh truth is that dog dumping is extremely cruel and unnecessary, and is happening far too often in Hart County.

Since the beginning of this year, the Hart County Animal Shelter has taken in 61 helpless puppies that were dumped and left to fend for themselves. That number doesn’t even include owner surrenders.

“These puppies should have been loved and cared for, but instead, they were discarded like trash – left on back roads, in ditches, or in a box at the laundromat,” said Hart County Shelter Administration. “Some are barely weaned, still needing their mother’s warmth. Others are sick, covered in fleas, or suffering from exposure. None of this is their fault. The shelter is doing everything it can, but resources are stretched thin. Staff and volunteers work tirelessly to help these animals, but the constant influx is overwhelming. Shelters are meant to be a refuge, not a dumping ground.”

On March 19, Animal Shelter staff were called to assist with a puppy dump on Robbin Lane in the Cub Run area.

“A major contributor to this crisis is the failure to spay and neuter pets,” shelter administration said. “Uncontrolled breeding leads to unwanted litters, and too often, instead of taking responsibility, owners abandon these animals. The Hart County Animal Shelter is pleading with the community: please, spay and neuter your pets. This simple act can prevent so much unnecessary suffering.”

What can you do? Ensure your pets are spayed or neutered. If cost is a concern, Animal Rescue Kare (ARK for Hart) offers low-cost spay/neuter vouchers available at https://www.ark4hart.org/shop or at the Hart County Animal Shelter. ARK also hosts events to sell these vouchers, making it easier for pet owners to afford this essential procedure.

If you suspect someone of dumping animals, report it. And if you have room in your heart and home, consider adopting. Dumped puppies and dogs didn’t choose to be abandoned, but you can choose to give them a second chance.

“The 61 stray puppies at the Hart County Animal Shelter are just the beginning,” said shelter administration. “If we don’t act now, that number will continue to rise. The question is, will we turn a blind eye? Or will we stand up and fight for these innocent lives?”
