Residents of Horse Cave and the surrounding area are used to traveling to Glasgow, Bowling Green, Nashville, or Louisville when they need surgery, but that is beginning to change.
On Thursday December 5, The Medical Center at Caverna held a ribbon cutting for the brand new Charles S. Caldwell Surgical Wing. A large crowd gathered to celebrate the completed project and to be among the first to see the new facilities.
“The new surgical wing is going to be a great benefit to our community and will be able to bring more surgical services closer to home,” Hospital Administrator Alan Alexander told Jobe Publishing. “Reducing travel will make medical care more convenient and reduce stress for patients.”
Alexander explained that the $2.2 million dollar project was made possible by generous donations from the Charles S. Caldwell estate, as well as a donation inspired by Mr. Caldwell from his friend Janet Leonard. These donations were paired with grant funding received with great assistance from Congressman Brett Guthrie and his staff.
Representatives of Congressman Guthrie’s office were on site for the ribbon cutting and were joined by Horse Cave Mayor Randall Curry, Medical Center administrators and board members, as well as many community members.
Dr. Tracy Cross, a surgeon at the facility, spoke following Mr. Alexander. Dr. Cross shared how “…a wise man once told him as long as we put the patients first, everything else will come to be.”
Cross continued by saying that he “…hopes we can expand surgery beyond his abilities.” That would include providing surgeries such as orthopedics and much more.
The ribbon cutting was hosted by the Hart County Chamber of Commerce.
