Community Medical Care Programs Help Southcentral Kentucky Residents Overcome Health Care Barriers

For some residents, the cost of medications, transportation, and other health care needs can create barriers to receiving necessary medical care.
Community Medical Care (CMC), a program of the T.J. Community Mission Foundation, offers help to qualifying residents in Barren, Metcalfe, and Adair counties through programs designed to help seniors, working adults, disabled adults, and oncology patients.
The organization provides assistance based on income and available resources, with programs tailored to specific needs.
Assistance for oncology patients
Community Medical Care’s “Breaking Barriers to Care” program assists T.J. Regional Health oncology patients across southcentral Kentucky.
Patients must have a low income, defined as 300% of the federal poverty level, and have no other resources available to pay for assistance.
To get started, patients meet with a T.J. Regional Health oncology nurse navigator, complete a Community Medical Care referral form, and sign a release of information form.
Assistance may include discounted nutritional drinks, gas cards, or transportation to treatment and doctors’ appointments. The program also may help with mastectomy supplies and post-surgery or aftercare needs, including prostheses, bras, camisoles, sleeves, gloves, and gauntlets. Cranial prostheses and wigs also may be provided.
In Metcalfe County, Community Medical Care is located at 1704 W. Stockton St. in Edmonton (old Nunns Drugs location). The office can be reached at 270-432-0229 or cmc@tjsamson.org. Appointments for Metcalfe are scheduled on Monday and Tuesday each week.
The Barren County office is located at 134 N. Race St. in Glasgow and can be reached at 270-659-0229. The Adair County office is located at 902 Wellness Way, Suite D, in Columbia, with the phone number 270-384-0229. Appointments for Adair are scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday.
Senior, working adult, and disabled adult programs
Community Medical Care also offers programs for qualifying Barren, Metcalfe, and Adair County residents who are seniors, working adults, or disabled adults.
The program serves seniors age 65 and older, working adults ages 18 to 64, and disabled adults ages 40 to 64. Applicants must meet the program’s low-income requirement of 200% of the federal poverty level and have no other resources available to pay for assistance.
Applicants must provide proof of all income and the previous year’s tax return, along with household Social Security cards, identification, and health insurance cards.
For seniors, a Senior Card is reviewed every six months. Community Medical Care pays 80% of medication costs, up to $250 per month, while the client pays a 20% copay. The voucher process must be completed before payment is issued.
The senior program can also assist with paperwork and copayments for discounted hearing aids and dentures.
Working and disabled adult cards are reviewed every three months. Community Medical Care pays 80% of medication costs, up to $200 per three-month period, with the client responsible for a 20% copay. Primary health care is also available for a small copay.
Services are offered through volunteers and donations. Patients remain responsible for services that are not donated or covered.
Community Medical Care’s programs are designed to help eligible residents with health care needs when financial resources are limited, helping remove some of the obstacles that can prevent people from getting needed treatment and medications.
