The May Primary election held a few surprises in Metcalfe County, such as the close results in the sheriff’s race between Republicans Jarrod Steele, who received 48.81% of the votes, and Joshua Neal, who received 51.19%. The end count was a mere 10 votes apart at 851 to 841. Neal will now run against Democrat Dustin Clemmons in the November election.
Another unexpected result was in the Judge/Executive race, with Harold Stilts, who had held the position prior to the current judge Larry Wilson, receiving only 39.02% of the votes, while Daniel Bragg received 60.98%. Bragg is currently the magistrate for 3rd District.
The 3rd District seat will now be between Republican Dwight Smith, who won out over Republican Richard Hodges in the primary, and Democrat Moe Hensley.
In the jailer’s race, incumbent Randall Shive will remain jailer as he defeated newcomer Jacob Glidewell by receiving 66.38% of the votes in the county.
Current County Clerk Shannon Fields will also remain in her position for another term as she defeated newcomer Amy Wilson by a vote of 514 to 253.
The 1st District magistrate will be decided in November as Republican Shane Dial will run against incumbent Harvey Hawkins, a Democrat.
In the 2nd District, the November race will now be between incumbent Kevin Crain, who won over newcomer Samuel Stotts in the Republican race, and Democrat Bobby Edwards. Finally, in the 4th District, Republican incumbent Ronnie Miller will be pitted against Democrat Dalton Bragg, who came in the winner with 70% of the votes over newcomer Christopher Jessee, a Democrat.
In the race for US Senator, Democrat Amy McGrath beat out Charles Booker by a wide margin, getting varying percentages ranging from 30 – 50% in the Metcalfe precincts. Meanwhile, Republican Andy Barr’s votes were double those of Daniel Cameron, with 57.26% of the votes.
The US Congressional seat was a landslide in favor of current Congressman James Comer, who received 89.66 % of the votes in the county. The only precinct to vote for lower than 80% for Comer was the Moore Spring-Flat Rock precinct at 79.22%.
At press time, these election results were still classified as unofficial.
There are 7,991 registered voters in Metcalfe County, and 2,938 votes were cast in the primary. That is a final voter turnout of 36.77%.
