Walter “Don” Donald England
EDMONTON – Walter “Don” Donald England, 88, passed away Friday, June 27, 2025, peacefully with family by his side at Metcalfe Health Care Center. He was born July 23, 1936, in Chestnut Grove, Kentucky, to the late Sanford and Mary England.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Christine Jessee. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Froedge England; daughter, Donnita England of Edmonton; niece, Carolynn Faye Landon of Greenwood, IN; nephew, Lonnie (Patricia) Jessie of Edmonton; great-nephews, Christopher and Alex Jessie. Also, special friend like a son, Charles Jolly of Edmonton.
Don was a jack of all trades and was a staple in the community throughout his years in Edmonton/Metcalfe County. Don was a lifelong farmer who loved his cows & Massey Ferguson tractors. He worked in the steel mills of Chicago for several years, where he became a master welder and used the skill to assist many once returning to Kentucky. He worked at Edmonton Mfg (Topps) for several years prior to retiring from the City of Edmonton Water & Gas. For almost 40 years, Don served in the roles of deputy/constable under 8 elected sheriffs. He worked closely with many Ky State Troopers who became life-long friends, especially Trooper Ron Bolin. He was the City Fire Chief for many years, along with various roles with the Emergency Management System for Metcalfe County. Don was the security guard for Bowling Park Bingo for 33 years. He began the first night of opening with Father George K. Bowling. Don loved seeing the patrons over the years and could tell one who sat where, which county/state they came from, and made many friends. Don was a member of Winfrey Chapel Church. He was known for always helping others, loved talking and never met a stranger. His love of basketball began with watching the Metcalfe County High School boys, specifically the 1982 team. He was an avid UK Wildcat fan and a strong Republican. He and his wife were known throughout the community for sitting on their front porch.
Funeral services for Don will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, June 30, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home in Edmonton. Burial will be in the Missionary Mound Cemetery. Visitation will Sunday from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM and after 8:00 AM on Monday at the funeral home. Butler Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted to the care of Mr. England.
