J and Nyla VanFleet were married at Big Muddy and recently celebrated their 68th Anniversary this past December.

J attended school in Rochester until it burned down.  He soon had to start attending school in Morgantown, where he met Nyla.  They graduated in 1955 and were married in 1956.

J worked for Caterpillar and Nyla was lunchroom manager at 3rd District School.  They were blessed with 2 children, 4 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.  Nyla stated that there have been good times and bad times, but the good times have outweighed the bad.

Larry and Joyce Guffy celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary this past December.  Larry lived in Morgantown and Joyce moved temporarily to Morgantown in 1962 from South Carolina.

Joyce decided one day that she needed a haircut, and she found a hairdresser named Sue.  Sue happened to be Larry’s sister, and after talking to Joyce she decided that she wanted to introduce Joyce to Larry.

So, after the introduction by Sue, the courtship began.   Joyce had to move back to South Carolina to continue school and graduate.  After Larry graduated, he also moved to South Carolina to work and be closer to Joyce.  They later married in Lincolnton GA.  After several years they moved back to Morgantown where they made it their home forever.  Larry retired from IMCO and Joyce retired from Ky State Government, Protection and Permanency.   They were blessed with 2 daughters, 4 grandsons and 5 great-grandsons.

Congratulations on 61 happy years together, from everyone at the Banner.

Tommy and Linda Wood have been happily married for 61 years. Every morning, when Linda boarded the school bus, the driver would jokingly say, “Here comes Tommy,” as Linda would hop off the bus, jump into Tommy’s car, and ride to school with him. Their connection blossomed, leading to a lifetime of love and partnership.

After graduation, Tommy worked in the mines, and Linda worked for the Ohio Co. Board of Education. Tommy soon joined the Army Reserves, and while on a two-week leave from the Army Reserves, Tommy and Linda decided to elope. In the past years, they have moved around some, and with every move, they made sure to find a church to attend and become members.

They settled in Morgantown and have been here for 55 years. They have also been members of Morgantown First Baptist Church for 54 years. Tommy and his brother started a coal mining business together while Linda took care of the books. Linda stated that Tommy was the best boss she had ever had. They raised a nice family together, having 3 boys and now having 8 grandchildren.

Congratulations on 61 wonderful years together from all of us at the Banner.
