Light the Square

Crowds spilled into the street.

When a community comes together magic can happen and that’s exactly what happened at Brownsville’s Light the Square.

This past spring the Edmonson Arts Guild decided they wanted to hold a Christmas event for Edmonson County.  They wanted a lighting event that would be inclusive of everyone.  Planning began with the Guild, but they soon realized that to deliver what they envisioned they would need help, enter Edmonson Lions Club, Parks and Rec, Homemakers, Judge’s office, Edmonson County Public Library and 4-H.

Judge Exec. Scott Lindsey and new Mayor of Brownsville Ricky Simon.

As the time grew closer and closer the meetings became weekly to keep everyone on the same page and make sure things were moving forward. New ideas popped up, the logistics of things had to be worked out and lots of work in the week before.

The South Edmonson Choir agreed to perform and did an excellent job. Mrs. Jessica Doyle does an amazing job with the children, and they all love her. The Bourbon Barrel Brothers agreed to loan out their sled for the night for a photo op. Trees were collected through donations from individuals and Cody Stewart from Parks and Rec. helped again and again to make sure they stayed upright.  Judge Scott Lindsey decided his tree would be a community tree that anyone could add an ornament to.  Homemakers had a tree and took control of vendor tables inside. Edmonson County Public Library and the Lions Club pitched in, The Senior Food Pantry decorated inside the community center and the Woodcock, Miller and Nugent family decorated and spent countless hours planning and contacting everyone to make this come together.

There was a large turnout for the Lighting. Event goers seemed to enjoy the decorations and events. The horse drawn carriage rides were a big hit, and the Grinch and Santa were of course the favorites.  Edmonson County Public Library held reindeer games inside after the lighting. Vendors were open to sell goods and refreshments were on sale.

Winners of Best decorations in the county were Lori Lynn Roof; Best in Brownsville were Tony and Sharon Zagaros and Best business was The Daisy Co.
