Sims Studio and Art Shop of Horse Cave recently hosted the Arts for All Kentucky Side by Side Project. Through the project, artists collaborated with students with disabilities to give them access to arts through various processes.
The Side by Side Art Workshop and Collaborations is a project sponsored by Arts for All Kentucky and hosted by Sims Studios and Art Shop. It is for students with disabilities to give them access to the arts through various processes.
During the week-long workshop, students worked with Jesse and Jennifer Sims during five sessions to explore artistic mediums. At the end of the week, students collaborated with a visual artist, where they worked side-by-side together to create a work of art.
Students spent the week exploring processes to create butterflies, cats, dogs, faux stained glass, cubist fish and doves, geometric designs, monotype prints, and collages.
“David enjoyed attending the Arts for All Side by Side Art Project at Sims Studios and Art Shop,” said Sarah Hileman of her son’s participation in the project. “He had fun painting Bluebot, a robot that he created with artist Andee Rudloff. David’s favorite pieces he painted during the week were his butterfly, cat, and Blue’s Clues’ house.”
This is the third year Jesse and Jennifer have helped to bring this program to Horse Cave, though last year, artwork was created virtually through Google Meets. Within the virtual platform, students created the portraits and the artists created the background for the collaboration.
This year, everyone was excited to return to in-person activities, with collaborations between 9 students and 5 artists.
The Arts for All Side by Side exhibit was on display at the Thomas House in Horse Cave and closed with a reception Thursday afternoon.

Delaire Rowe, Executive Director for Arts for All Kentucky, collaborated with Mackenzie Green.
