Dennis Melvin Smith
GLASGOW – Dennis Melvin Smith, 71, died Thursday, June 25, 2026, in his favorite place, his farm. He was born in Barren County to Melvin and Joan Button Smith. He attended Red Cross Elementary and Park City High School (Class of 1972).
During high school, Dennis was active in Future Farmers of America (FFA). From 1972 to 1973, he served as the State Secretary for the FFA, and in the same year 1972 he won the FFA National Public Speaking Award with his topic, “Solution to Pollution”. In 1974, he achieved the coveted American Farmer Degree, a title granted to only 18 in the State of Kentucky that year.
Dennis graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1976 with a degree in agriculture while he worked on the family farm in Barren County, raising beef cattle. After completing college, his career propelled him into business first as a Farm Bureau Insurance agent, customer service manager at Tyson Bearings, safety manager at Bullard Safety, and eventually to Quality Manager at Ingersoll-Rand.
Dennis’s career took him to four different states, beginning in Western Kentucky and ending in Southeast Michigan. At the age of 55, Dennis retired from corporate America to return to his beloved family farm, where he lived until his death, farming the same land that he had farmed as a teenager and raising the beef cattle that he loved.
He served as a supervisor of the Barren County Soil Conservation District and a board member for the Barren County Ag Development District. Additionally, he served a partial term on the Board of Directors for the Barren County Cattlemen’s Association.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 42 years, Stephanie Stewart Smith; his son, Stewart and wife Amber Harley Smith of Atlanta, GA. His uncle and aunt, David and Bettye Lois Smith, and numerous cousins, as well as a gaggle of good friends and neighbors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Dennis to the Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society or the Barren County Educational Foundation.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at A.F. Crow & Son Funeral Home, with burial in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 10:00 AM until time for the service at the funeral home.
