The Herald-News
In the future, we will refer to this snow and ice event as the Storm of 2026, much like we do with the ice storm of 1994. However, dealing with it right now is certainly not enjoyable.
The temperatures are so low that the snow and ice are not melting, and when they do, they quickly freeze again as nighttime temperatures drop even further, creating a hazardous skating rink effect.
The road crews and everyone who has contributed to keeping the roads open have done a fantastic job in these difficult conditions.
This severe weather has even led to the closure of government offices, public libraries, and medical facilities, and any businesses that have remained open are operating with minimal staffing.
Many residents have been without power for days, including the staff at the Herald-News, while others are still waiting for repair crews to work on the damage caused by Mother Nature’s fury. Fortunately, Metcalfe was lucky to have the warming center at Leftwich Hall in Bowling Park, where many have sought warmth and shelter for days.
Our loyal Facebook friends and newspaper readers have been submitting their damage photos, and we are giving you a look at some of those now.
