Coach Dustin Barnett took over the basketball program for Coach Calvin Dockery at the high school, which left the top coaching position at BCMS dormant as his assistant coach, Adam Stovall, went with him to BCHS. It probably did not take the administrative team a substantial amount of time to make a replacement decision.

Head Coach Isaac Dockery, who teaches at the middle school and served on his dad’s staff, made perfect sense for the team. As young as he may appear, Coach Dockery has already established an extraordinary amount of time learning under Calvin, as a player and as an assistant. His style has many similarities, and the athleticism of the Bears is being exploited every moment they take the floor.

The 8th grade Bears have narrowly missed some wins while being competitive in all their early contests. Much like last year’s team, finding the cohesiveness of this squad is a challenge. However, it is definitely a blessing to have the athleticism of this group. Finding the right rotation will take some time but look out later in the season.

Coach Dockery will not hold back with his younger players; many of the seventh-grade players contribute significantly. Like the older Bears, the 7th graders are quick and athletic, solidifying good, sound defense. It is the offensive prowess which stands out for the 7th Bears, who stand tall against some strong opponents, with an impressive, 4-2 record.

While the older squad returns many of the same faces from last year’s team under Coach Barnett, Coach Dockery has added quite a few more players to the younger Bears; plus, they are playing some sixth-grade games. The wealth gained from a crowded bench manifests greatly from practice and the opportunity to demonstrate those fundamentals sponged by the youngsters through playing in game competition.

Floor time is being diversified greatly in all three age groups as the staff figures out strengths and areas for improvement in individual players and the teams as a whole. That is the great beauty in it all, when that coexistence of balance takes precedence over the athleticism racing out of control. Look for this staff to not only have success doing just that along with being a GRVC title contender.

Coach Isaac gets assistance from Calvin along with Jonah Akers and Soloman Flener. Chad Bratcher is the statistician for the teams, as well. After going to Edmonson and hosting Ohio this week, the Bears will play McLean County on Thursday night. Get there early around 5ish for a comfortable, new chairback at BCMS.
