Special Olympics Area 5 Bowling Tournament Returns to Bowling Green
Staff Report
RICHMOND, Ky. — More than 200 Special Olympics bowlers will return to Southern Lanes in Bowling Green on Saturday, Oct. 25, for the Special Olympics Kentucky Area 5 Bowling Tournament.
The tournament will take place in three sessions. The first session, featuring the men’s singles competition, will begin with opening ceremonies at 8:45 a.m. and competition starting at 9 a.m. The second session will include women’s singles, ramp-assisted bowlers, and the Unified Bowling competition, which pairs a Special Olympics athlete with a partner who does not have an intellectual disability. Opening ceremonies for that session will begin at 11:45 a.m., with bowling starting at noon.
Participants will bowl two games, with total pinfall determining division winners. Athletes who win their division—and some second-place finishers—will advance to the State Bowling Tournament in Louisville, Dec. 6–7.
Among those competing will be Dillon Meador of Rockfield, who was recently selected to represent Team Kentucky as part of the bowling delegation at next year’s Special Olympics USA Games in Minneapolis.
The Area 5 Bowling Tournament includes Special Olympics athletes from Allen, Barren, Butler, Christian, Edmonson, Grayson, Logan, Metcalfe, Simpson, Todd, and Warren counties. Bowling remains one of the most popular sports offered by Special Olympics Kentucky, attracting more than 1,300 athletes statewide each year. The State Bowling Tournament is the organization’s largest individual sport event.
