PRESS RELEASE

The City of Edmonton is pleased to announce a favorable outcome on all issues in defending an appeal to the Kentucky Attorney General regarding an Open Records Request. The decision, issued on August 8, 2025, affirms the City’s commitment to transparency and legal compliance in handling public records requests.

The appeal, initiated by a citizen dissatisfied with the City’s responses to multiple records requests, was thoroughly reviewed by the Office of the Attorney General. The decision concluded that the City did not violate the Open Records Act when it did not provide records it does not possess and when it provided all records in a timely manner. The City was found to have adequately explained its denial of two requests on appeal, which were initially denied due to a lack of a precise description of the records sought.

City officials expressed satisfaction with the decision, highlighting the importance of upholding public records laws while ensuring that requests are handled efficiently and in accordance with statutory requirements. “This decision emphasizes our dedication to transparency and our compliance to the legal standards set forth by the Open Records Act,” said Mayor Smith. “We are committed to providing access to public records while ensuring that requests are clear and manageable.”

The Attorney General’s decision also emphasized the necessity for requesters to comply with statutory requirements when seeking review of a public agency’s response. The Office dismissed portions of the appeal that did not meet the compliance standards.

The City of Edmonton remains steadfast in its mission to serve the public with integrity and transparency. This outcome reaffirms the City’s efforts to balance the public’s right to access information with the practicalities of managing public records requests.
