Obituary: Vila LaVette Johnson, of Morgantown, passed away

Vila LaVette Johnson, affectionately known as LaVette, passed away peacefully at her residence in Morgantown, Kentucky, on Friday, February 28, 2025. Born on Tuesday, November 16, 1954, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to the late Roy L. and Loretha Harris Johnson, LaVette lived a life marked by generosity, community service, and a love for the outdoors.
LaVette’s early years were filled with the warmth of a large family, including her three siblings Kenny, Perry, and James Johnson, who preceded her in death. She carried the spirit of family with her throughout her life. She was survived by two children Tanya Sublett Arnold and Randy D. Sublett Jr. (Rachel), both of Morgantown, KY. LaVette’s joy was multiplied through her two grandchildren, Bretton and Madison Westmoreland both of Morgantown, KY, and her eight great-grandchildren, Braxton, Linxton, Briley, Braygan, Brinley, Bryer, Ozias, and Kylar.
LaVette’s siblings, Retha J. Lee of Benson, NC, Marlin G. Johnson (Sandy) of Bloomington, Indiana, Terry L. Johnson (Faye) of Benson, NC, Ella Hunt of Morgantown, KY, and Idinah Cummins (Craig P.) of Springhill, TN, along with her sister-in-law Linda Johnson of Morgantown, KY and several nieces and nephews.
A woman of faith, LaVette was a member of Cool Springs General Baptist Church. LaVette loved getting everyone together at Jenny Lynn Apartments and being the event coordinator, which allowed her to express her spirited personality and knack for bringing people together. LaVette’s commitment to her community was evident through her volunteer work with Community Action, where she gave back with both her time and talents.
LaVette’s interests were as vibrant and diverse as her personality. She found solace and joy in gardening, working with her flowers, and engaging in various crafts. An enthusiast of the great outdoors, she enjoyed fishing, camping, and any opportunity to be outside, embracing the beauty of nature. Above all, LaVette loved spending time with her great-grandchildren, creating memories that will be treasured for generations to come.
Funeral services will be held at the Jones Funeral Chapel Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at 11:00am with Bro. Frankie Skipworth officiating. Private burial will be in the Dan Johnson Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025 from 5:00pm -7:00pm and Tuesday 8:00am until funeral time at 11:00am at the Jones Funeral Chapel.
