On Monday, February 3 at 4 p.m., Munfordville Mayor Annie Swift submitted her letter of resignation.
The following afternoon on February 4 during a special called meeting, the Munfordville City Council held a vote to fill Swift’s vacant seat. The person chosen by unanimous vote to serve as the city’s next mayor was Mr. Ricky Line, effective immediately.
Line, who was currently serving his third term as a City Council member, has a strong rapport with the citizens of Munfordville and the county as a whole, having grown up in the area. He served 45 years in education, with 33 of those years in Hart County, beginning as teacher and coach and progressing to assistant principal, principal, and superintendent.
Line shared that although he would have preferred to remain a Council member, a discussion was held and it was determined that a Council member should be the one to fill the vacancy.
“They (fellow Council members) all felt I had the most experience in leadership,” Line said of his nomination and subsequent appointment as mayor.
When asked if he’d like to share anything with the citizens of Munfordville as he steps into his new role as mayor, Line said that he and the City Council members as a whole simply want to make the city better.
“We’re going to work on finances for the next four months to try to get a good budget ready for next year,” Line said. “…Our job is to get us financially, fundamentally sound, and then go from there on the projects that we want to do.”
According to Hart County Clerk Felicia Shelton, in situations like that of a mayor resigning, the current City Council followed protocol in selecting the new mayor. In this case, Line will serve as Mayor of Munfordville until the next regular election is held.
The now vacant City Council seat that Line previously held will go to the Council for vote of who should fill the position.
The Hart County News-Herald contacted Swift for a statement, but no reply was given as of press time.
