This year, Community Action is celebrating 60 years of helping seniors in 13 locations in 10 counties. Last Wednesday, many of the employees and volunteers gathered from the various counties to celebrate and take part in the annual Employee and Volunteer Appreciation Day.
The event was held at the beautiful Auburn Fire Department in Auburn, KY. The Auburn Fire Department averages 25 firefighters, 14 of which are medically trained first responders. The Auburn Fire Department and the Auburn Rural Fire Department work closely together to provide the citizens and community of Auburn with fire protection services.
As reported today by Kathy Fugate, Program Director at Community Action in Bowling Green, this year Community Action has delivered 35,767 meals to the homes of seniors across the 10 counties and has served 31,737 in-house congregate meals at the Senior Centers in those counties.
Each Senior Center has an assortment of activities planned weekly for seniors to come and enjoy. Many come for physical activities, to gather information, to meet new people, or to just come hang out in the center and watch TV with friends.
Community Action is involved in many more activities and programs that will benefit seniors in your community such as collecting their commodities, offering Farmers, Market Vouchers, health fairs, resource fairs, vaccination clinics, Older Americans Month events, cooking classes, Tai Chi, walking, beginning line dancing, advance line dancing, exercising, card games, crafts, cornhole, bingo, transport, information and referral services, nutrition education, outreach, telephone reassurance, medical supplies and Rx refills to name a few.
If you are a senior or know a senior who needs help with one or many of these services that Community Action offers, please call your local Community Action in your town (Metcalfe is 270-432-4006). There is always someone who can help you with what you need. Or you can contact BRADD at 270-782-9223 if you need to set up home delivery meals for you or a senior you may know.
Members of the centers must be at least 60 years old (Spouses are eligible regardless of age) and there is no income requirement.
