Last Friday, the Metcalfe County Farmers Market was brimming with booths and people. The BRIGHT Coalition was there with all kinds of enjoyable games and information.
Not only were there fun carnival activities for the kids and food demos for adults, but there were several healthcare resources available, such as representatives from Med Center Health, Barren River District Health Department, and TJ Health. All that plus the weekly vendors at the market.
The event offered a full day of speakers covering topics like mental health, aging and disability, cancer screening, health insurance, addiction recovery, internet safety, and CPR.
Not only does the market have a regular variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, but there are bread, beef, sweets, crafts, and books.
Plus, if you have been diagnosed with Alpha Gal, you know the problems finding foods without ingredients that trigger the allergic reaction. There has been an increase in the tick-borne disease of late.
One booth has a solution to that with meatless “Sun Burgers,” which are made with several protein-packed ingredients. After tasting, it would be a good alternative that would be delicious in spaghetti. The booth also had information about Alpha Gal and recipes.
Also represented was Community Action of Southern Kentucky, and Erin Gilley was signing children up for Head Start and Early Head Start. Since there are no daycares in the county, early head start and head start could be great alternatives for children.
If you missed Friday’s market, you missed some very informative booths, but the regular Metcalfe County Farmers Market is held each Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the pavilion located at 441 East Main Street, Edmonton.

Anyone with Alpha Gal Syndrome would appreciate these “Sun Burgers”. They have no red meat in them, and after tasting one, they would be great with spaghetti. The Richardson booth also had information about food allergies and recipes. Photo | PJ Martin

Along with the vegetables, sweets, and bread, Sidden’s farm-raised beef was also available. Photo | PJ Martin
