A Rockin’ Success: Local nonprofit helps launch students in their new school year

Local nonprofit hosts Rock the Block to help launch students in their new school year

The heat didn’t stop the fun on the downtown Square in Glasgow last Saturday. Old Timers Reunion hosted a Rock the Block bash for students returning to school. The local nonprofit along with sponsors, including Houchens Food Group, spent the day helping prepare students for the school year ahead. Two hundred backpacks and supplies were given away as well as a raffle for several Chromebook laptops, both of which helps steer students for success.

Last week, we shared details on the event and Old Timers Reunion Chairman Barrett Wright told us that if the event went well, they may decide to host another one.

Free food, fun, and fellowship alongside a DJ with live music and the Glasgow Scotties football team as special guests, children and teens, and the community as a whole enjoyed the day together.

“We all believe that the day went well,” Wright said. “Our goal was to give away all of the backpacks and supplies, Chromebooks, and the food, and we did just that.”

Wright said the kids attending had a great time.

“The football team interacted with the young people and that’s what it’s all about,” he added. “Special thanks to the Houchens Food Group for being the title sponsor, and everyone else that pitched in with monetary donations, volunteering, and attending.”

Old Timers Reunion dates back to half a century ago when community members came together for an annual reunion at Donnelly Park. Wright said that reunion paused for about 20 years, but with the formation of a steering committee in 2021, it has returned, but even better. The nonprofit’s mission seeks to bridge the gap for youth, seniors, and the community at large.

And the reunions are back. The next one is slated for August 30 at Twyman Park (301 Bunche Avenue, Glasgow), and everyone is welcome to attend. Reunion time runs from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
