Gary Lawrence Richardson

Gary Lawrence Richardson, 79 of the Randolph Community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at NHC Healthcare in Glasgow. Gary was born on December 23, 1945, to the late Albert Lawrence Richardson, who was killed during WWII on Luzon Island, Philippines (before Gary was born), and the late Ollie Mae Barrett Richardson. Gary was raised by his mother (Ollie Mae) with the help and love of his grandparents, Vervin (I.V.) and Effie (Witty) Barrett, in which Gary loved being a part of the family farm all of his life.

Gary attended all twelve years in the Metcalfe County School System, graduating in 1963 as Salutatorian of his class. He attended David Lipscomb College and obtained his master’s degree from Western Kentucky University. Gary began his teaching career teaching at the Metcalfe County School system. He was not only a teacher to many students, but an assistant coach to the Metcalfe County High Boys Basketball team, the first Metcalfe County Girls Basketball Coach (1974-1992), Athletic Director, Metcalfe County Principal, and Metcalfe County Superintendent. Gary wore many hats during his career. He always wanted to encourage and uplift the students any way possible. After retirement, he was employed and worked many years at Butler Funeral Home in Edmonton. He was appointed Deputy Coroner and served in this capacity for several years before deciding to retire a second time. Gary and Martha enjoyed collecting antiques, and we’re avid UK Fans.

Gary was a member of the South Edmonton church of Christ, in which he preached his first sermon at the age of sixteen and his last sermon in November 2023. He preached in many congregations throughout south central Kentucky, baptized many into Christ, and has officiated many weddings and funerals, giving loving and comforting words to many families. Gary was a kind and compassionate man who never met a stranger.

Gary is survived by his wife and soulmate, Martha (Cook) Richardson, having gone on their first date on August 3, 1969. They were married August 9, 1970.
